The problem seems to be solved now, thanks to revision 1.19 of
apps.lds:

  firmware/apps.lds, revision 1.19
  date: 2003/04/24 20:25:10; author: zagor; state: Exp; lines: +2 -0
  Added word alignment

Without the apps.lds fix, the improved scramble utility still produces
an image that hangs or crashes when booted. It might be better to
remove the improvement and issue a warning (or fatal error?) instead.
